The Los Angeles Chargers successfully completed the first series of NFL Flag Football events in Greece, marking a historic milestone for the development of the sport in the country. The activities took place in Santorini, bringing together hundreds of children and families for a dynamic celebration of sports, education, and culture.
When Sports Meet Tradition
The Los Angeles Chargers organized two flag football camps, an exhibition game, and youth activities, giving local boys and girls the opportunity to discover and play the sport in a fun and inclusive environment.
The initiative aimed to promote flag football ahead of its inclusion as an official Olympic sport at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, to honor the Greek heritage of the Spanos family – whose roots trace back to the island of Symi – and to strengthen the NFL’s global presence.

Greece Discovers Flag Football: The First Youth Camps
- Children aged 11–13 had the opportunity to participate in a flag football camp organized by the Los Angeles Chargers, learning the fundamental principles of the sport in a fun and safe environment.
- Teenagers aged 13 and above took part in a second camp, where they developed their skills and deepened their understanding of the game under the guidance of Chargers ambassadors.
A Special Exhibition Game in Greece
An exhibition game in Santorini brought together Chargers legend Melvin Gordon, Greek-American former NFL linebacker and two-time Super Bowl XLII participant Niko Koutouvides, Greek-Swedish player and coach Melina Malaxos, members of Aegean Elite – Greece’s leading American football team – as well as representatives of the Los Angeles Chargers. The event showcased the energy, excitement, and teamwork that define flag football.

Honoring Excellence and Contribution
As part of the celebrations, special awards made of marble — a material deeply connected with ancient Greece and the Olympic Games — were presented to symbolize tradition and perfection, bridging historical heritage with the modern era. The awards were given to individuals who contributed to the growth of the sport and international cooperation, including:
- the Spanos family
- Chargers legend Melvin Gordon
- the winning team of the exhibition game, which received the MVP Stoiximan Award
Watch Party: Chargers vs. Dolphins
On Sunday, October 12, representatives of the Greek media, VIP guests, and NFL fans gathered for an exclusive watch party, watching live on COSMOTE TV as the Chargers defeated the Miami Dolphins 29–27.

During the Chargers’ visit to Santorini, Mr. Fred Maas, Chief of Staff and Counselor of the Los Angeles Chargers, stated:
“From the beginning, our goal was to bring the sport of American football to Greece. In the early stages of this effort, we wanted to achieve this goal by providing opportunities for young people to experience flag football — helping kids understand, enjoy, and learn what an amazing sport football is. In addition to the youth camps and exhibition game in Santorini, we also hosted a watch party to bring people together, share the excitement of the game, and give more fans the chance to feel its energy up close. The Chargers’ presence in Greece means a lot to us and to the Spanos family. We are excited about what’s ahead and look forward to our next visit.”
The events were organized with the support of the Municipality of Thira, reinforcing a shared commitment to youth empowerment and community engagement through sports.

The introduction of American football in Greece was made possible through the active support of Stoiximan, which contributed to the organization of the events and enhanced the island experience through its social initiatives.
High-Level Meetings to Strengthen Collaboration
During their visit, the Chargers held a series of important meetings with leading Greek officials and institutional representatives, including:
- Christos Dimas, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport
- Vasiliki Koutsoukou, Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development (on behalf of Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni)
- Isidoros Kouvelos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee
- Nikos Zorzos, Mayor of Thira
- Representatives of Deree – The American College of Greece

These meetings highlighted a shared vision to expand international sports collaborations, promote Greece as a hub for athletic and cultural exchange, and strengthen youth participation through sports development.
