A project of major environmental and cultural significance is entering the implementation phase, as a programmatic agreement is signed between the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Organization for Natural Environment and Climate Change, and the Municipality of Dio-Olympos, with the aim of maintaining, upgrading, and modernizing the hiking trail network on Mount Olympus.
The project aspires to highlight Olympus as a model of sustainable natural resource management. The countrys first National Park, the Mountain of the Gods, is not only a premier destination for nature lovers, hikers, and climbers, but also a living monument of global natural and cultural heritage.
The initiative, led by the Municipality of Dio-Olympos, combines environmental protection with tourism development and cultural promotion of the area. The projects objectives are multidimensional: enhancing safety, improving accessibility, upgrading visitor experience, and preserving biodiversity.
The routes being upgraded
The first route concerns the section Litochoro Mills Prionia Spilios Agapitos Mountain Refuge, which forms part of the international European Trail E4. It is the main passage toward the peaks of Olympus, of great importance both to the mountaineering community and to nature-based tourism.
The second route connects the National Park Information Center with the Enipeas Gorge and ends at the Litochoro Mills. This route, apart from offering easy access, passes through a unique geomorphological and ecological landscape of high significance.
Planned interventions
The planned interventions include extensive works to upgrade and secure the trails. Damaged wooden footbridges will be replaced, and new ones will be added where necessary to ensure continuous and safe passage for visitors. Wooden steps, railings, and guardrails will be constructed at hazardous points, while key sections of the trails will undergo restoration of dry-stone walls and improvements to walkability. The project also includes the installation of a rest kiosk and the enhancement of signage for better hiker orientation. At the same time, systematic maintenance and cleaning of the trails are planned to prevent uncontrolled human impact on the ecosystem and ensure the balance of the natural environment.
Benefits and prospects
The project promises significant benefits on multiple levels. Beyond enhancing the visitor experience and ensuring safety, it is expected to boost the local economy and create employment opportunities. Moreover, it contributes to showcasing the cultural identity of Olympus, bringing to the forefront its mythological and historical significance.
The combined investment in natural infrastructure, environmental protection, and cultural promotion makes Olympus an even more attractive and sustainable destination not only for todays hikers, but also for future generations.
