The Municipality of Orestiada is preparing a comprehensive framework for tourism development, aiming to create a multi-theme destination that will strengthen the local economy, enhance the quality of life, and fully utilize the unique geographical and cultural elements of the region. The area of Northern Evros, with its diverse nature and rich historical imprint, is considered suitable for the development of various forms of tourism that complement each other and enhance visitation on an annual basis.
At the forefront is cultural tourism, with the area hosting one of the most important archaeological sites in Thrace. At the Doxipara Zoni Burial Mound, visitors encounter unique finds of chariots and horses, while the journey continues through traditional settlements with characteristic Thracian architecture. The city also has significant museums, such as the Historical and Folklore Museum of Nea Orestiada and the Karratheodori Museum, as well as thematic exhibitions, including the Interactive Science & Technology Exhibition “Eugene Eugenides,” the Archaeological Educational Exhibition of the Cave, and the Petrified Stone Museum of Petros. This is further enhanced by cultural events and festivals that keep traditions alive and form a strong element of the tourism product.
Religious tourism also plays an important role, with sacred monasteries and churches of historical interest, such as the Monastery of Agia Skepi and Agia Paraskevi in Nea Vyssa, offering opportunities for spiritual tours.
The Municipality steadily invests in ecotourism and agrotourism, utilizing cultivable land and the natural landscape. Visitors have the opportunity to explore farms with local crops, from corn and sunflower to the characteristic garlic of the region and fruits of Thrace, and participate in agricultural activities and tastings. Agrotourism nights in the blooming lavender fields of “Aroma Evros” between Valto and Fylakio have become particularly popular, offering wellness, relaxation, and nature experiences. Ecotourism trails along the Arda River enhance gentle forms of recreation.
In the field of conference and educational tourism, collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace creates a framework for organizing conferences, seminars, summer schools, and activities related to biodiversity, agricultural production, and the centuries-old history of Thrace. The academic community acts as a multiplier of added value, attracting specialized audiences.
The region has also expanded sports tourism, utilizing the natural environment of the Arda River. Activities such as canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and beach volleyball, combined with the renowned Arda Festival that blends music, culture, and sports, attract a youthful audience and promote outward-looking tourism. Additionally, cycling routes and hiking trails in the Triangle, the Petros Quarry, Korakopetra, and the mountainous countryside create a complete network of sports options.
Another dynamic sector is cross-border tourism, leveraging the strategic advantage of proximity to Bulgaria and Turkey. The region can establish joint routes, tourist packages, and cultural exchanges that enhance visitor flow and foster a sense of cooperation in border areas.
The goal is for Orestiada to become an alternative destination for sustainable tourism, with respect for nature, the local community, and its cultural identity. According to the Municipality, this strategy will lead to the promotion of natural and cultural resources, the continuous increase in annual visitation, the creation of experiences based on ecotourism, agrotourism, and culture, and the overall stimulation of the local economy through new jobs and improved living conditions. At the same time, strengthening connections with neighboring areas is expected to serve as the foundation for even closer cross-border cooperation in the future.
