The Municipality of Nisyros is proceeding with the establishment of the Nisyros Environmental Education Center, which will operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Municipality and various educational and scientific organizations. The decision, supported also by the Nisyros Primary School Omirion, is based on the school’s long experience in environmental education programs, providing a solid foundation for the development of the new facility.
As emphasized by the Municipality, Nisyros, with its active volcano and unique geological footprint, possesses a rare natural and cultural heritage. Its inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network strengthens its position as an island of significant educational and research interest, creating the conditions for the development of a model Environmental Education Center.
The main purpose of the new Center will be to promote environmental education and scientific knowledge through hands-on activities that link the natural environment with local culture and society. Its operation is expected to raise awareness among students, university students, and citizens on sustainability issues, while also highlighting Nisyros as a hub for educational and research tourism.
In this context, the Center will be able to host programs for all educational levels, from activities for young students focused on the volcanic land and flora of the island, to educational trails, digital applications, and STEM programs for older age groups. For university students and researchers, there will be summer schools, research initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaborations with Greek and international universities, in partnership with the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
The experience of the Nisyros Primary School in good environmental education practices, such as the school garden with local plants, composting programs, recycling at the school and community level, and the creation of wildlife observation spaces, forms a significant background for the operation of the new Center. The Center aspires to become a reference point for educators and students.
According to the Municipality, the creation of the Environmental Education Center is expected to bring multiple benefits to Nisyros, as the presence of student and academic groups year-round will contribute to the extension of the tourist season. It is also emphasized that local hospitality and dining businesses will be strengthened, new jobs will be created, and school and public infrastructures will be upgraded, with the local community benefiting from the increased visitor traffic.
The prospect of establishing Nisyros as an international model island for environmental education and sustainability is, according to the local authorities, a strategic step that connects education with local development, transforming the islands natural wealth into a driver of knowledge, outward-looking initiatives, and sustainable progress.
