A 12 km network of bicycle lanes is planned in Athens over the coming years, expected to serve around 260,000 users annually.
The project, led by the Municipality of Athens and funded through the Attica program, is part of broader efforts to promote resource-efficient, circular economy practices and active mobility.
The new network will expand the existing bicycle infrastructure along the Northern Axis of the Metropolitan Bike Lane (Gazi Kifisia). The plan prioritizes a gradual integration of bicycles into urban space, starting with a low-cost, rapid implementation of a primary network, followed by the addition of larger-scale infrastructure projects. Connections with public transport stations and key points of interest will also be considered.
The main streets included in the expansion are Athinas and 3rd September, as well as local streets in neighborhoods such as Kypseli and Patission, aiming to connect city districts. The initiative will begin with pilot applications and expand to four areas of Athens, covering a total length of over 12 km of bike lanes, primarily on-road lanes.
Benefits of the project include:
- Reduced urban noise and air pollution
- Improved urban microclimate
- Increased road safety
- Promotion of public health
- Enhanced urban and suburban environment sustainability
- The total co-financed public expenditure for the project is 2.5 million.
