Education Tourism: First school reader in demotic Greek turns 100

One hundred years since the first publication of Zacharias Papantoniou’s “The High Mountains” – the first school reader written in demotic or “everyman’s” Greek – an event is to be held in the Greek city of Lamia on Sunday to mark the centenary and also present a second publication that tracks its tumultuous history – “A 100-year-old school book: 1918-2018” by Dimitrios Natsios.

The book was written as a primary school reader and was introduced after the educational reform act of 1917, passed by the government of Eleftherios Venizelos.

The event is organised by the Fthiotida writers’ club and will be held at the Lamia Municipal Theatre at 11:00 on Sunday.
