The extremely low temperatures which have prevailed in large parts of Greece over the last several days have caused not only traffic disruptions and physical damage, but also phenomena that are rarely seen in a Mediterranean country such as Greece, according to greekreporter.com.
Such an example was seen in the region of Epirus recently, in the northwestern part of the country.
The persistent frost there due to the low temperatures of the last several days froze the stream which runs under the famous stone bridge of Kokkori, in Zagori, Epirus.
Passersby recorded the rare phenomenon on their phones, showing the small river which flows through the Zagori region totally frozen over.
The current, naturally, did not have large amounts of water, but the water which had been running there froze completely, creating a peculiar scene, since running water freezes with some difficulty. Small plates of ice had buckled and refrozen along the edges of the stream, while beautiful swirling patterns had been scored into the ice in the center of the frozen water.
Even though the storm dubbed ”Hephaestion” has already left the country, low temperatures remain across large areas of the Greek mainland.
For example, temperatures dropped as low as -11°C (12°F) in locales in northern Greece on Wednesday night.
Nevertheless, temperatures are expected to rise again gradually in the coming days.
