FedHATTA: Travel Agencies Targeted by Unprecedented Online Fraud – What Travelers Should Watch Out For

A serious case of online fraud targeting Greek travelers has recently emerged, exploiting the name of a legitimate travel agency to deceive clients.

According to information received by the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Travel & Tourism Agencies (FedHATTA) and the Hellenic Association of Travel & Tourist Agencies (HATTA) from a member agency that was targeted, unknown individuals sent mass emails using addresses identical or very similar to the agency’s official email. The goal was to trick recipients into the fraud.

The fraudulent emails contained requests or offers for loans or capital provision, activities completely unrelated to the agency’s operations. This poses a serious risk, as it undermines the reputation of the legitimate agency, misleads the public and partners, and exposes citizens to potential financial fraud.

The travel agency reported the case to the Cybercrime Division, while FedHATTA and HATTA forwarded details to the Ministries of Citizen Protection and Tourism, the Regional Tourism Office (Attica), and the Ombudsman.

Legal Travel Agencies: A Shield of Protection for Travelers

This is not the first time that Greek travel agencies have been targeted by fraudsters who exploit legitimate businesses to illegally gain profit at the expense of the agencies and travelers.

FedHATTA and HATTA remind the public that legally operating travel agencies are the only reliable option, as they provide safe and high-quality services that protect consumers according to current legislation.

FedHATTA President, Lysandros Tsilidis, stated regarding the recent incident:

“To avoid unpleasant situations, it is important to deal only with reputable travel agencies that have a Certificate of Legal Operation according to the applicable law or have registered their business on the state platform ‘OpenBusiness’ as required by Law 393/1976, as amended. Cooperation with independent or uncertified intermediaries carries not only financial risks but also risks concerning service quality and reliability.”

Key Advice for Greek Travelers

Trust only legally operating travel agencies (physical or online) for bookings and travel arrangements. Avoid individuals or businesses operating illegally, as they provide no protection.

Check the agency’s ΜΗΤΕ number, which must be displayed on their website, in all advertisements, contracts, and general terms for organized trips.

Choose agencies affiliated with national Travel Agency Associations. Look for their logos on websites or printed materials.

For organized trips:

Carefully read the terms and conditions.

Sign a contract containing trip details and the rights and obligations of both the traveler and the agency.

Obtain a copy of the contract and proof of service.

Ensure the trip is covered by the agency’s civil liability insurance (as required by Presidential Decree 7/2018). Travelers may also opt for additional travel insurance for accidents, illness, or trip cancellations.

For airline or ferry tickets only (not packaged trips): Ensure that after payment, you immediately receive the tickets.

By following these precautions, travelers can avoid scams and ensure safe, reliable travel arrangements.
