The green light for the initiation of procedures to claim recognition of the entire island of Chios as a UNESCO Global Geopark was also given by the North Aegean Regional Council, which, by an overwhelming majority, adopted a positive decision, following the unanimous decision of the Chios Municipal Council.
The decision of the Regional Council includes the approval for the preparation of Chios’ application file for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, the participation of the Region in financing the process up to 50%, as well as the authorization of the competent services to carry out all required actions, in collaboration with scientific and local bodies.
At the same time, the establishment of a committee to support and monitor the application is foreseen, with the participation of representatives from local government, scientific collaborators, and social and professional organizations of the island, aiming at the coordination and institutional strengthening of the process.
This represents a particularly significant strategic step for Chios, the result of months of efforts and collaborations. At this point, it should be emphasized that recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark is not only about the protection and promotion of geological heritage but also creates opportunities for sustainable development, the enhancement of thematic tourism, and international visibility of the island. At the same time, the process is advancing steadily and methodically, supported by collective effort and the collaboration of institutions and local society.
