Vasilokloura – Boukouvala 2026

On January 11, at 11:00 a.m., the Lamia Indoor Gymnasium “Chalkiopouleio” is scheduled to host the cultural event “Vasilokloura – Boukouvala 2026,” co-organized by the Municipality of Lamia and the Sarakatsani Association of Fthiotida “O Katsantonis.” According to the organizers, delegations from associations and members of the Panhellenic Federation, as well as associations from abroad, are expected to arrive in Lamia from January 10, with the aim of participating in the events.

The Sarakatsani Association of Fthiotida was founded with the purpose of preserving, promoting, and disseminating Sarakatsani tradition. Counting more than 800 members, the Association has evolved into an active cultural organization, with activities including music and dance ensembles, educational programs, participation in gatherings, and various events that strengthen the connection with oral tradition and the customs of the Sarakatsani people.

The “Vasilokloura – Boukouvala” represents one of the most important institutions of the Sarakatsani Hellenism. The vasilokloura, a traditional New Year’s cake, symbolizes prosperity and family unity, while the boukouvala, the ritual exchange of gifts and wishes, expresses cohesion and solidarity within the community. Through these customs, a vibrant cultural identity is highlighted, remaining relevant and deeply connected to the local area.

The event program will include traditional dances, musical performances, exhibitions, and speeches, emphasizing the significance of intangible cultural heritage and its role in contemporary society. As noted by the organizers, such activities serve as a “bridge” between younger and older generations, keeping the distinctive characteristics of Sarakatsani culture alive.

The choice of Lamia as the venue is considered strategic, as the city lies “in the heart of Roumeli,” a region with a rich historical trajectory and strong ties to the nomadic pastoral tradition. The event is expected to enhance Lamia’s cultural outreach and contribute to its tourism promotion, as the presence of visitors from across Greece and abroad creates a positive impact on the local economy, particularly in sectors such as hospitality and catering.
