The film “We Come As Friends” by Austrian film director Hubert Sauper from 2014 is “a modern Odyssey, a breathtaking journey into the heart of Africa” and has been awarded with the Peace Film Prize last year at the Berlinale, according to an XpatAthens review.
The film is playing in or after the time when Sudan, the largest African country, is divided into two nations. It is much about power, faith, territories and resources. Hubert Sauper takes up in his small, self-designated and built aircraft from sheet metal and canvas to the most unlikely places and deep into the thoughts and dreams of the people. A complex, profound and humorous cinematic endevour.
A modern odyssey
The film is a modern odyssey, a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa. At the moment when the Sudan, the continent’s biggest country, is being divided into two nations, an old ‘civilizing’ pathology re-emerges –that of colonialism, clash of empires, and new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources.
The director of DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE takes us on this voyage in his tiny, self-made, tin and canvas flying machine. He leads us into the most improbable locations and into people’s thoughts and dreams, in both stunning and heartbreaking ways. Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this documentary.
Peace Film Award
If “history does not repeat itself, but rhymes”, WE COME AS FRIENDS bares witness to this disquieting reality – it is a complex, profound and humorous cinematic endeavor – a tale of very old and rather sinister verses.
WE COME AS FRIENDS won the Peace Film Award at the 64th International Berlin Film Festival.
At the same time, the film will be screened in various European countries such as Cyprus, Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Poland, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands, as part of a pan-European campaign by the distribution network Moving Docs, which CineDoc is a part of.
Supported by the Austrian Embassy, the film is showing at 16:00 on 06DEC at Danaos Cinema.
In English with Greek subtitles.
