Orthodox Greeks celebrate Easter (photos+videos)

All across Greece people filled the Orthodox Churches to celebrate the resurrection of Christ on Saturday night after midnight.

From the Athens Metropolis to Crete and Kefalonia, millions of devout faithful observed Saturday night’s liturgy, staying beyond the typical midnight ‘Christ has Risen’ words uttered by priests at the altars.

In Crete a lot of Churches upheld the traditions of Christ’s resurrection and the burning of Judas’s effigies.

On the Ionian island of Kefalonia, hundreds of christians and the clergy celebrated Easter together at the island’s central Argostoli plaza by chanting in unison the ‘Christ has Risen’ hymn, with firecrackers illuminating the night.

In Messolongi, in Central Greece, large crowds of all ages gathered at the metropolitan Temple of Agios Spyridon to sing the message of the resurrection of the God-man.

The images were similar on the island of Paros, where people flocked the church of Agios Georgios to hear the joyous Easter message of life. Night became day when the words ‘Christ has Risen’ were heard by the priests, with many firecrackers creating an atmosphere of jubilation.
