European Space Agency (ESA) Director General Johann-Dietrich Woerner on Thursday addressed an event held at the Education, Research and Religions Ministry in Athens, on the benefits of space programmes for the planet.
Woerner explained that the cooperation of some 20 European Union member-states plus Norway and Switzerland was carried out in such a way that no crisis might affect the course of the agency’s programmes, while space research might be able to bridge differences that may arise between countries.
As an example, he pointed out that the greenhouse phenomenon and the possibility of global warming was not observed for the first time on Earth but on the planet Venus. As for the many different languages and cultures used within the ESA, Woerner said this multicultural environment was not a liability but an asset promoting good cooperation within the Agency.
He also referred to the role of ESA programmes in monitoring housing development, providing early warning for fires and checking sea water levels.
Alterate Minister for Research and Innovation Costas Fotakis noted that brain drain was one of the effects of the crisis on Greece, as its scientists left to find better conditions abroad. He said that his talks with the ESA director general had focused on ways to create new jobs in the country so that some of its scientsts might return and work in Greece.
