A tale of two musical styles on stage at the Herod Atticus Odeon

Byzantine meets Ottoman music in a grand concert taking place at the Herod Atticus Odeon in Athens, as the “Tropos” Byzantine Chorus joins a group of Turkish religious singers. Bridging the two acts are two musical instruments: the lyre, played by Constantinople Greeks; and the nei, the musical instrument of the dervishes.

Transporting audiences to Constantinople, the concert covers a wide range of Eastern music, including the Byzantine and Ottoman music. Performing on stage, accompanied by his ensemble, will be Kudsi Ergüner, the famed nei virtuoso and Unesco ambassador for art; as well as political lyre maestro Sokratis Sinopoulos.

“Tropos” Byzantine Chorus – Center for Studies of Psalmodic Art was founded in 2005 by Konstantinos Angelidis and his colleagues, with the purpose of studying and promoting Byzantine music. “Tropos” has performed many times in Greece and abroad, and has recorded 13 albums.
