Acropolis restoration service in the spotlight at Acropolis Museum in Athens

ATHENS – Without a doubt, just being able to view the Acropolis, the Sacred Rock is heart-warming and reassuring to Athenians in the time of the coronavirus. And while the work of the Acropolis Restoration Service has paused, this is a good time to remind of their heroic efforts.

Chisel and Memory, the current exhibit at the Acropolis museum that is also on pause, highlights the contribution of marble craftsmanship to the restoration of the Acropolis monuments.

Vasiliki Eleftheriou, Director of Acropolis Restoration Service (YSMA), presented a private tour of the exhibition to The National Herald just a few hours before the crisis closed the museum.

She explained its genesis in discussions with Dimitrios Pandermalis, Professor of Archaeology and president of the Museum’s Board of Directors.  “When he saw the material,” Eleftheriou said, he liked it very much and agreed immediately, adding his own observations.”

A video was also created from archive material and it was decided to dedicate the exhibition to Haralambos Bouras, who served as President of the Committee for the Restoration of the Acropolis Monuments (ESMA) from 1975-2016.
