Ancient Greek antiquities, sites, and the Archaeological Museum of Marathon were not damaged by the recent destructive fire in East Attica, but two post-Byzantine churches sustained significant damage, the Ministry of Culture said on Tuesday, after the completion of archaeological inspections in the region, ANA reports.
The ministry noted in a statement that the East Attica Ephorate of Antiquities found no damage at the following sites: the acropolis of Ancient Aphidnae in Kapandriti, the organized sites open to visitors in the Municipality of Marathonas (Rhamnous, Tumulus of the Athenians, Sanctuary of the Egyptian gods in Brexiza of Nea Makri), the Archaeological Museum of Marathon, Ikarion at the Municipality of Dionyssos (Sanctuaries of Dionysus and Apollo, area of the theater, etc).
On the other hand, the roof of the post-Byzantine church of Aghii Apostoloi within the archaeological site of Oenoe in Marathonas was severely damaged, as were its contemporary painted surfaces (the church does not have frescoes). Also damaged were the modern roof and the interior of the post-Byzantine church of Aghios Athanasios in Kalentzi, Marathonas, although its frescoes were untouched by the fire, the ministry said.
In the Municipality of Penteli, near the quarries, the cave of Davelis and the two churches sustained minor damage.
No other monument or site in the surveyed region of East Attica has been damaged, the ministry concluded.
