Promotion and protection works of Castle of Mytilene progressing rapidly on Lesvos

The protection and promotion works of the Castle of Mytilene the Culture Ministry finances with resources from the Recovery Fund and from the Regional Operational Program of the North Aegean, of the NSRF 2014-2020 and 2021-2027, are progressing rapidly, according to a Culture Ministry announcement on Wednesday, ANA reports.

A set of important studies has now been completed – geotechnical, architectural, and static studies of the Great Enclosure, the Acropyrgos, and the Ottoman gunpowder store – in order to proceed smoothly with the restoration work carried out by the Ministry of Culture through the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos.

The Castle of Mytilene is one of the largest surviving medieval castles in the Mediterranean, covering an area of 6 hectares.  It is mainly the work of the Italian Gateluzzi family, who dominated the island in the late Byzantine period (1355-1462) and the Ottomans, who occupied Lesvos from 1462 to 1912. It was the core of the city’s defense and administration during the medieval period,” Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said in her statement.
