The Region of Central Macedonia has announced a call for proposals for the protection, promotion and promotion of the region’s cultural heritage, within the framework of a co-financed programme with a total budget of 13 million euros.
The initiative aims to strengthen the Region’s sustainable and inclusive tourism development, while at the same time promoting culture and the creative economy as drivers of social and economic progress.
Cultural development and accessibility
The programme includes interventions that concern both the physical protection of monuments from climate risks and the improvement of their accessibility to all visitors. Particular emphasis is placed on communicating the value of cultural assets to the general public, with actions such as information material (including in Braille), audiovisual productions, educational programmes, and the use of new technologies. At the same time, promotion and publicity actions are being strengthened through workshops and conferences, which will highlight the contribution of culture to the local economy.
High-priority projects
In collaboration with the Executive Structure of the Ministry of Culture, projects of great importance and a high degree of maturity have been selected and will be financed, such as:
· The consolidation and restoration of the Byzantine aqueduct of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator on Mount Athos.
· The conservation of frescoes in the chapel of the Holy Anargyroi of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi.
· The restoration of the bell tower and the south wing of cells in the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Agia Anastasia Farmakolytria.
· The restoration of the Yeni Tzami mosque in Edessa and the church of Agios Georgios in Chortiatis.
· The expansion of the Kilkis Archaeological Museum and the promotion of the Aigai Palace.
· The restoration of the Kasta Tomb and the creation of visitor reception infrastructure.
· The upgrading of the “Apostolos Pavlos” Religious Center and the reuse of the Athonia Academy.
Additional interventions on Mount Athos
In addition to the above, funding for projects in monasteries of the Holy Community of Mount Athos is planned, with a budget of 6,000,000 euros. These interventions concern the preservation and restoration of monastic infrastructure, enhancing religious and cultural tourism in the region.
The call for proposals is considered to be an important step for the protection of the cultural heritage of Central Macedonia, while promoting sustainable tourism development and the preservation of historical monuments with modern methods of promotion and promotion.
