Kardamaena, Kos, also known as ancient Alasarna, will continue to be the subject of systematic archaeological research this year as well. The Ministry of Culture, through the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, granted permission to the Department of Archaeology and History of Art of the Department of History-Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the National University of Athens, within the framework of the five-year extension of the archaeological program (2024–2028).

The excavations will be carried out under the direction of Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology, Ms. G. Kokkorou-Alevras, with key collaborators Professor Emeritus of Byzantine Archaeology, Ms. S. Kalopisi-Verti, and Assistant Professor of Classical Archaeology, Mr. N. Dimaki. The aim of the research is to promote knowledge, protect and highlight the archaeological site.

The work program for 2025 includes, among other things, excavations at the M. Hieromnimonas site, with exploration of the sanctuary of Apollo and the monumental Hellenistic buildings E and Z, as well as the Roman building between them and the remains of the early Byzantine settlement. In addition, the sections will continue under the concrete skeleton of the unfinished hotel used as a storage area for the excavation mission, selective demolition of witnesses and maintenance-fixation works will be carried out, while the excavation soils will be arranged.

The permit was issued with strict conditions, including supervision by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese and the obligation to provide timely information about the schedule and the participation of students. In addition, detailed lists of findings from previous years are requested, with an emphasis on metal objects and the corresponding studies, as well as the submission of a final report with photographic and design documentation after the completion of the 2025 research.

The excavations in Kardamena offer visitors the opportunity to explore a historic site with lively archaeological activity, combining the magic of Greek cultural heritage with the experience of direct contact with the history of Kos.
