The Municipality of Hersonissos is proceeding with a significant intervention to enhance accessibility and the overall upgrade of its beaches, with the installation of three new systems for people with disabilities (PWDs).
Specifically, the new equipment will be installed on the municipal beaches of “Potamos” (Malia Municipality), west of the Bella Maris Hotel (Malia Municipality) and “Estavromenos” (Gouvo Municipality). The project is fully financed – with the amount of 182,228.08 euros – by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, with co-financing from the European Union – Next Generation EU.
The project includes the construction of non-permanent ramps, the supply of auxiliary facilities, special signage for accessible beaches, as well as other equipment that will ensure equal access to the sea.
The application of the municipality of Hersonissos was submitted to the General Secretariat for Tourism Policy and Development of the Ministry of Tourism (IPDE: 355/10-05-2024) and was included in the subproject SUB6 “Improvement and modification of accessibility to Greek beaches” of the “Tourism Development” Action of the Recovery Fund.
The mayor of Hersonissos, Zacharias Doxastakis, stated that “upgrading our beaches with modern accessibility infrastructure is our strategic choice. Our goal is a sustainable and inclusive municipality, where all citizens and visitors, regardless of mobility difficulties, can equally enjoy our natural wealth.”
