A new page is opening for the Galaxidi Naval and Historical Museum, as the Delphi municipal council unanimously approved the formation of a special working group that will undertake to draw up the roadmap for the upgrade and modernization of the historical institution. The decision was taken at the meeting of October 14, 2025, following a relevant proposal by the mayor, Panagiotis Tagkalis.
As the mayor pointed out, the issue was raised following an initiative by distinguished personalities of Galaxidi and followed by communication with the municipality, where the main objectives of the effort were outlined. At the top of these is the substantial upgrade of the Museum, its repair and maintenance, the integration of modern audiovisual media and the creation of a new wing, in order to enrich the visitor’s experience and enhance interaction with the exhibits.
The working group will undertake to record the necessary interventions, prioritize them and explore every possibility of financing, either from national resources or from European programs. The aim is for the Museum to adapt to modern requirements and maintain its historical character, remaining a point of reference for the maritime heritage of the place.
At this point, it should be emphasized that Mr. Tagkalis thanked the members who accepted to participate in the group, emphasizing that their course and contribution are a guarantee of success in the implementation of the goals.
The working group consists of:
Aikaterini Galani, Assistant Professor of Maritime History, University of Piraeus
Nikolaos Karatzas, former Professor of Medicine and Honorary President of the Museum
Efthymios Mitropoulos, Honorary Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Honorary President of the Board of Directors of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation
Aikaterini Nikolaou, Professor of Byzantine History, University of Athens and Scientific Advisor to the Museum
Rodanthi Sentrouka, Creative Director and Founder of the Company “Red Design Consultants”
Also participating are the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Unit of Galaxidi, Ioannis Varvatos, and the Municipal Councilor, Athanasios Tsonakas.
The initiative is considered pivotal for the future course of the Museum, which, for more than half a century, has been a living monument to the country’s naval history and a valuable link connecting Galaxidi with its past and future.
