Orthodox Academy of Crete: Conference on Doric Temple of Goddess Demeter in Ancient Falassarna

The scientific conference that will take place on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 6:30 p.m., at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, will focus on highlighting a unique monument in western Crete, the Doric Temple of the Goddess Demeter in ancient Falassarna.

The event is jointly organized by the Orthodox Academy of Crete and the Association of Friends of Ancient Falassarna “Nikos Kakaounakis”, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, with the aim of informing the local community about the excavations at the sacred site and highlighting its historical and cultural value.

At this point, it should be emphasized that the presentations will cover the range of findings and interpretations associated with the temple and its archaeological surroundings.
Speakers will be Dr. Elpida Hatzidaki on the topic of “The Doric Temple of the Goddess Demeter in Ancient Falassarna”, Dr. Michalis Milidakis with a presentation on “Elements of worship from the Temple of the Goddess Demeter and Persephone in Ancient Falassarna”, Nikolaos Maragoudakis with a presentation on “The Sanctuary of the Goddess Demeter in Ancient Falassarna. Cult enclosures, organization, unification and division of space”, and Panagiotis Zervoudakis, who will refer to “Neolithic findings from the sacred rock of ancient Falassarna”.

The event is part of the broader effort to highlight the cultural heritage of Crete and the interconnection of the ancient world with modern initiatives of scientific and social dialogue promoted by the Orthodox Academy of Crete.
