Aegina: New breath in cultural tourism with the illumination of Aphaia

On the evening of November 9, Aegina will welcome the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni for the inauguration of the illumination of the emblematic Temple of Aphaia, one of the most important archaic monuments in Greece. The project is emerging as a landmark for the island’s cultural tourism, adding a new dimension to its image in the Argosaronic Gulf.

As Stavros Kalamakis, president of the Aegina Hoteliers’ Association, pointed out in an interview with Tornos News, this is “a particularly important project that upgrades the island’s cultural portfolio”. At the same time, as he announced, a letter has been sent to the Prime Minister with a request to attend the inauguration.

Aegina on track for record visitor numbers
This year, Aegina is setting a new visitor number record, confirming the momentum it has gained in recent years. As Mr. Kalamakis told Tornos News, “the season developed positively, with increased arrivals and high occupancy, which demonstrates the continuous strengthening of the island’s tourist profile.”

Although official figures have not been published, Aegina is expected to exceed two million visitors this year, with the exact number expected in the near future.

At this point, it should be emphasized that the illumination of the Temple of Aphaia is not just a project of aesthetic value, but a strategic investment in the cultural identity and sustainability of the destination. Aegina, thanks to its geographical proximity to Athens and its authentic physiognomy, is attempting to upgrade its position on the cultural tourism map, integrating the cultural experience into the broader hospitality planning.

At the same time, the enhancement of visitor numbers is linked to the improvement of infrastructure and the development of thematic forms of tourism, from gastronomy to trails and local festivals.

The illumination of the Temple of Aphaia, beyond its symbolic weight, also sends a clear message, as it is emphasized, Aegina is no longer content with the image of a nearby weekend island, but is moving towards a more comprehensive strategy of extroversion, investing in what makes it unique – its cultural heritage, history and the authenticity of its hospitality.
