A major tourism infrastructure project is being launched by the Karatzis Group, with the expansion and upgrading of the hotel tourist port located in front of the luxury hotels Nana Princess and Nana Golden Beach in Drapanos, Hersonissos. The project, which concerns the amendment of the existing 2010 environmental permit, has received a positive opinion from the Environment and Spatial Planning Committee of the Region of Crete, marking the next stage of implementation.
New infrastructure and increased capacity
The study provides for the construction of a new 190-meter-long windward pier made of unreinforced concrete and natural boulders, which will improve sea protection and expand the berthing area. At the same time, the installation of four new platforms on piles, each 15 meters long, is planned, which will allow the safe mooring of small pleasure boats. After the completion of the project, the total capacity of the port will reach 34 boats, capable of serving even larger boats than the current ones.
Infrastructure upgrade and environmental protection
The plan also includes extensive maintenance work on the existing quays, the installation of refueling and lighting infrastructure, as well as modern waste and sewage management systems. The liquid waste from the boats will be taken for treatment to the existing Nana Beach unit, while special tanks will collect fuels and lubricants for safe removal by licensed operators.
The Region of Crete, in its positive opinion, set specific conditions that ensure the protection of the marine ecosystem and the stability of the coastline. According to the coastal engineering study, the new configuration of the port is not expected to cause disruption to the natural circulation of the waters, while the geomorphology of the area – mainly rocky – limits the transport of sediments.
A project with added value for the local economy
The upgrade of the Nana Hotels marina is an investment of strategic importance for the Karatzis Group and for the tourism of Crete. It is taking place at a time when the tourism infrastructure of Crete is constantly being upgraded in view of the major investment in the new airport in Kastelli, Heraklion Prefecture. The new port infrastructure will enhance the experience of visitors with high demands, will contribute to attracting marine tourism and will strengthen the position of Hersonissos as a premium destination.
Although the amount of the investment has not been made public, the project is part of the Karatzis Group’s broader plan for the continuous upgrade of its tourism infrastructure, combined with sustainable development and respect for the environment. The start of work is expected to take place after the end of the tourist season, with a completion schedule of approximately 13 months, so that the new marina will be ready to welcome the first visitors before the summer of 2027.
