Two awards at EuroMed 2025 Best Practice Awards for the “Memory Trail 1940–1944” at the 3rd Athens Cemetery and the Study for the City’s Museums
A significant award was given to the “Memory Trail 1940–1944”, a project implemented by the Development Company of the Municipality of Athens in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Department of the Urban Planning Directorate of the Municipality of Athens, at the site of the 3rd Athens Cemetery.

The initiative was awarded in the Best Practice Award category for Local Government Bodies, within the framework of the 6th Panhellenic Conference on Digitization of Cultural Heritage – EuroMed 2025, which took place from 19 to 22 November, at the “House of Cyprus” (Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus), in Athens.

The project entitled “Those Who Missed It. A Journey of Remembrance 1940–1944 at the 3rd Cemetery of Athens”, was presented by Zetta Antonopoulou, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Athens and Eliza Neophytou, architect-pedagogue specializing in Museology.

This is a work that utilizes modern tools of documentation, digitization and public history, paying due respect to the victims of the Occupation and reinstating the 3rd Cemetery as a place of memory and historical education.

Both executives received a distinction for their work, while Ms. Neophytou was also honored with an award for best scientific work for the Study on Museums within the Municipality of Athens, in the context of the need to map the city’s Museums on behalf of Development Athens.

In his statement, on the occasion of these distinctions, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, noted: “These two distinctions confirm the deep commitment of our city to the preservation, promotion and sustainable utilization of its cultural heritage. I would like to congratulate the executives who worked with scientific excellence and dedication, as well as the Athens Development Agency for its key role in supporting and implementing initiatives that promote knowledge, respect for memory and the extroversion of Athens. These awards encourage us to continue with even greater determination”.

For his part, the CEO of Athens Development Agency S.A., Ioannis Georgizas, emphasized: “The awards recognize the systematic way in which Athens Development Agency invests in the documentation, innovation and modernization of the Municipality’s cultural tools. We will continue to work consistently so that the history, knowledge and cultural heritage of the city remain alive and accessible to all. Congratulations to the executives who worked with dedication for this result”.

About the “Memory Trail”

The “Memory Trail 1940–1944” maps the area of the 3rd Cemetery through a thematic and chronological tour of the years of the Occupation. It highlights landmarks, monuments and graves of those executed, connecting the evidence of the era with the stories of people who perished “before they had time” to experience liberation.

The project is under the scientific supervision of Zetta Antonopoulou, Dr. of Art History and Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Athens, and the museological supervision of Eliza Neophytou.

The Study on the Museums of the Municipality of Athens

The Conference also presented the extensive Study on the Museums within the Municipality of Athens, which was prepared at the initiative of Development Athens. The Study maps the Museums located within the administrative boundaries of the municipality, records the needs, educational tools, the level of accessibility of the Museums and suggests modern strategies for strengthening their extroversion and educational function.

The presentation received warm reviews and was awarded by the scientific committee as one of the six best papers of the Conference, confirming the importance of strengthening its cultural infrastructure for the city.

The Study is part of Development Athens’ strategic planning for the upgrading of the city in the field of culture and is a key tool for planning actions that will promote a more sustainable and accessible “cultural map” for residents and visitors.
