Koullias Hotels systematically invest in meaningful communication with their staff, aiming to strengthen collaboration and shape a human-centered Hospitality environment. Initiated by the General Manager, Ms. Eleni Basi, meetings with employees from all departments evolved into a lively workshop for exchanging opinions, experiences, and values that define the modern character of work in hotels.
Information about this initiative is provided by Anda Karagianni from Praxis Plus, a company based in Rhodes with extensive experience in the Hospitality sector:
Open dialogue with young employees
Last summer, hotel management met with the younger employees to gain a deeper understanding of their needs, dreams, and concerns. Topics discussed included collaboration with older generations, happiness at work, future challenges, as well as honest self-reflection on areas where the new generation may fall short.
The points raised were made public, enhancing knowledge and sensitivity regarding working with young employees and better integrating them into tourism-related work.
This year: Participation of all departments and focus on values
This summer, the meetings expanded to include all staff. The discussion focused on human communication and the values that build a stable and supportive work environment.
Topics such as work–family balance, stress management, daily emotional readiness, and the need for genuine understanding among colleagues were central.
Bridges between generations and nationalities
Despite the challenges in “unlocking” people, the discussions brought employees from different departments, ages, and countries closer together.
The need for support rather than competition, acceptance of diversity, and the cultivation of positive behaviors emerged as common conclusions.
The power of recognition
A particularly notable exercise was recognizing the positive qualities of each colleague. Although it caused some awkwardness, it highlighted the value of generosity in daily work.
One employee commented: “If you are stingy as a person, even the most beautiful theater will not make you applaud.”
Recognition was presented as an act that elevates both the individual and the team.
Intercultural experiences and mutual respect
Employees from abroad spoke about initial misunderstandings due to cultural differences, but also about the sense of acceptance they ultimately received. They requested even better communication, while appreciating the already significant improvements in departmental relationships.
Maintaining balance and respect was recognized as a key factor for mental health and cooperation.
Hospitality as a profession: challenges and prospects
Tourism, after the disruptions of the pandemic, faces difficulties in attracting personnel. Seasonality, the intensity of work, and the multicultural nature of teams complicate the systematic cultivation of a Hospitality culture.
Koullias Hotels emphasize that the essence of work is not only technical training but also the development of values, character, and respect.
“Hospitality Culture” as a way of life
The company’s philosophy emphasizes authenticity, knowledge, empathy, and above all LOVE for people—whether guests or colleagues.
Daily interaction with people from different cultures and generations becomes a source of growth, self-improvement, and joy.
Training beyond duties
The company offers training in areas such as mental health, equality, safety, healthy nutrition, and familiarization with the local environment and culture.
The goal is a life of serenity and balance—not only at work but also within the family.
“Conversations of love”: A living cell of corporate culture
Koullias Hotels management gave these meetings this name to emphasize the core of the effort: love as the driving force of Hospitality.
Smiles, hugs, and authentic communication are elements that enhance not only teamwork but also the experience ultimately offered to guests.
