Three Greek photographers were among the Reuters team that was awarded the highest honour in the profession of professional news photography by receiving the Pulitzer prize for capturing moments of the refugee crisis.
John Behrakis, Alkis Konstantinidis and Alexander Avramidis were co-winners with the New York Times staff photographers in the category ‘Breaking News’ for covering the refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East.
John Behrakis is the head of the Reuters photography for Greece and Cyprus, and along with other two Greek colleagues received the highest accolades by brining to the world the suffering and plight of the refugees though their camera lenses.
Through their eyes and camera lenses they brought us powerful imagery of refugee-packed, half sunken dinghy boats in the Aegean Sea, expressions of agony, fear, exhaustion, anger and finally relief on the faces of refugees. But above all they gave us the human will to survive:

Associated Press piked up the Pulitzer for best ‘Social Reportage’ on its coverage of the working conditions of exploitation in the fishing industry, while the LA Times got the distinction for the covering the San Bernardino massacre. The winners were announced in all 21 categories at Columbia School of Journalism in New York during the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer prizes.
