The building of the former “Villa Amalias” squat in the city center of Athens has been renovated and will soon begin to operate as a high school.
For over two decades the building had been occupied by anarchists and operated as a squat, live venue and social center, until it was forcibly evacuated by the police in 2012.
In the past the building had been used as a school, from which many important Greeks graduated, such as lyricist Lefteris Papadopoulos, painter Alekos Fasinos and the Archbishop of Albania Anastasios.
In presenting the newly-renovated building, the Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis revealed that the school will be named after the late director Theodoros Angelopoulos, who also graduated from the school.
