Two Greek Cypriot troops, missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion, are set to be laid to rest on Sunday after they were found and identified using DNA techniques.
Nikos Palazis, a soldier from the 211 Infantry Battalion, fell fighting in now occupied Trachonas on July 23, 1974.
Palazis’ funeral is set to take place at 11:15am at Agiou Kyprianou Church, Meniko.
Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou is expected to lay a wreath on behalf of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.
The second identified soldier, Stavros Georgiou Poirazi, from Strokkilo, Ammochostos, is set to be laid to rest after his funeral service at 11:30am at Agios Eleftherios Church, Latsia.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied its northern third. UN-led talks have been underway since May 2015, with a view to reuniting the island under a federal roof.
