Stores in Greece to open on Sunday for Christmas shoppers

Stores around Greece will be open on Sunday (Dec. 18) as part of the opening hours followed during the holiday season which started on December 15. In Athens, the opening hours proposed by the local chamber of commerce are from 11:00 to 18:00.

At the same time, a sample check conducted by the Institute of Trade and Services on Dec. 14-19 found that this year’s Christmas table will be more expensive by 2.42 percent compared with 2015, with the price hike attributed mostly to the higher cost of seasonal delicacies. The estimated weighted average increase, which takes into account the increase of the VAT rate from 23 pct to 24 pct in the traditional “melomakarona” and ”kourambiades” – deserts offered during the holidays – is close to 8.36 percent compared to the same period last year.
