Snow falling on Pilio, the ‘Centaurs’ Mountain’ in Greece

Snow has started to fall in the picturesque mountain villages of Pilio near Volos, also known as the ‘Centaurs’ Mountain’, since early on Friday morning. Local authorities are battling to keep roads open with snow ploughs and salt as the snow fall intensifies, with up to 10cm of snow reported in Hania.

The snow has started to settle from the altitude of Portaria and above and the Volos traffic police recommend use of snow chains above this point. Temperatures were reported at -3 C in Hania and did not reach above 6C in the town of Volos, on the coast. The weather service is predicting that the weather will deteriorate further during the night and have not ruled out snow in central Volos.
