Polls have opened for Cyprus’ municipal elections on Sunday at 07:00, as Cypriots and permanent residents on the island select the mayors and municipal councils in their towns and villages.
A total of 1,344 polling stations are open across the island.
In the Nicosia district 356 polling stations will operate for the municipal elections and 145 for the communal elections, in the Limassol District 246 for the municipal and 120 for the communal elections, in the Famagusta District 48 for the municipal and 29 for the communal, in the Larnaca District 154 for the municipal and 91 for the communal elections and in the Paphos District 64 for the municipal and 91 for communal elections. A special polling station will operate at the Central Prison where prisoners will exercise their electoral rights.
Voting will end at 18:00. There will be a short break between 12:00 and 13:00.
Chief Returning Officer Constantinos Nicolaides has said that if all runs smoothly the names of the elected mayors and heads of the communities will be announced by 22:00, whereas the members of the municipal/community councils and school district boards will be announced in the morning hours on Monday.
A total of 8,000 employees and members of the police work today to ensure that elections run smoothly, while 1,500 unemployed graduates will be employed at the polling stations.
