Occupiers leave Athens Polytechnic ahead of uprising anniversary

Members of an anti-establishment group ended their occupation the National Technical University of Athens (the Polytechnic) on Thursday following requests by the students’ union.

The occupation started on Wednesday morning and ended peacefully, while police increased its presence ahead of the events for the 44th anniversary of the Polytechnic student uprising in 1973.

The students’ union had asked both protesters and police to depart so that the planned events can take place peacefully, while the 17 November 1973 Celebration Committee asked that the matter be resolved “on political terms” and not by the “forces of repression.”

Members of the students’ union entered the Polytechnic to prepare Friday’s commemorative events, and set up rotating vigilance groups that will remain on the premises during the night.

Those who wish to lay flowers or a wreath at the Polytechnic may do so as of Friday morning, while the annual march to the US embassy will begin from Patission Avenue at 3:00 p.m.
