Greek female lawyer injured by flare in Exarcheia transferred to hospital

A woman who was injured in the knee by a flare in Exarcheia area was transferred to “Evangelismos” hospital on Friday night and is expected to undergo surgery, police sources said. Accoring to sources, her condition is not serious.

She has been identified as a lawyer who was talking to photojournalists at the corner of Notara and Kountourioti streets. The flare is believed to have been fired with an improvised flare tube.

The injury occured as clashes erupted between anarchists and riot police in the streets around the Athens Polytechnic University. About 100 youths threw dozens of petrol bombs, stones and other objects against riot police at the corner of Stournari and Tsositsa Streets, behind the university, after the end of the annual protest march to the American embassy.

Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades, while a helicopter was hovering over the scene. Protesters have set up road blockades with garbage bins.

In front of the Polytechnic, where a large police force is stationed, the situation appeared calm.
