Pipes to connect Greek island of Aegina with mainland water supply damaged

The Saronic island of Aegina long-awaited connection with the mainland’s water supply will apparently wait even longer, as sabotage was discovered last week, with holes drilled into six of the pipes that were anchored on the surface of the Salamina Bay since last October, naftemporiki.gr reports.

The pipeline has a depth of as much as 93 meters and covers a distance of 14 kilometers, this largest such project in Greece.

According to the Athens daily “Kathimerini”, the damage was uncovered during a routine check, with authorities noting the 5.5-cm holes were apparently made by simple electric household drill on six of the 33 individual pipes.
