MYKONOS – With the summer tourism season likely mostly lost over the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic that has almost shut down worldwide travel, tougher restrictions are being placed on the popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini, including a night curfew.
Residents are not allowed out of their homes for any reason from 8 at night until 8 the next morning, a 12-hour complete shutdown which even bars going to help an ill relative, duties that will be taken over by the municipality, said Kathimerini.
Other restrictions include suspending weddings, for now, allowing only close relatives to attend funerals and abide by social distancing requirements of staying some 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) apart.
In families where parents are split or divorced, the parent who does not have custody of the children will not be allowed to visit them as long as the more stringent conditions last, while exercise is disallowed with dog walking limited to 15 minutes.
There are also stricter than usual crowd control measures in supermarkets where shoppers are supposed to stay away from each other although that frequently doesn’t happen as they go up and down the aisles. All construction activities are suspended.
The measures began April 5 and will last at least through April 19 when they will be reviewed as the country’s lockdown will be in place until April 27 but likely will go on longer if measures to contain the spread of the virus are still needed, the government said of its plans that have held down cases and fatalities compared to other countries.
