Greek microbiologist forecasts COVID-19 break during summer (video)

ATHENS – The head of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute’s Department of Microbiology, Dr. Andreas Mentis, said warmer summer weather could see the COVID-19 Coronavirus wane but cautioned it will take a vaccine to stop another outbreak later in the year.

Speaking to the state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) he said that a lockdown imposed by the New Democracy government keeping most people in their homes, and social distancing to keep people at least 1.5-meters (4.92 apart) had shown signs of working.

But he said if a vaccination is not developed soon, “we will face a real pandemic” in the fall and winter because only inoculations can cut down on a resurgence.

“As we all know, an epidemic can only be stopped by vaccination and there are some hopeful messages on this front that the first vaccinations will become available in the fall or shortly after. Let’s hope this happens; otherwise, we will face a real pandemic,” Mentis said.

Hotter summer weather “may give us some breathing room and the time to explore even better treatments. There may even be a vaccination by the fall that will prevent the virus from spreading further next winter,” he added.
