Greek government won’t extend mandatory COVID-19 vaccine shots yet

Despite worry from health officials as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the New Democracy government won’t make shots mandatory for more categories of workers or others.

The General Secretary of Primary Healthcare, Marios Themistokleous, told Mega TV that could change at any moment as the New Democracy government has fluctuated about its intentions, trying to save lives while easing health restrictions to further boost a battered economy.

“As long as we continue to make appointments, any measure of obligation moves away,” he said in reference to people wanting to be vaccinated – although the campaign has stalled markedly.

He said that 190,000 people – out of a population of 10.7 million have received the third dose of the vaccine as a booster but didn’t mention there are so many anti-vaxxers spreading the virus.

While making shots mandatory only for health care workers so far, not even for teachers, the government has been reluctant to confront the violent front of those who refuse to be vaccinated.

“We find some people who are hesitant, (get them to) talk to health professionals, and we have managed to convince some of them to get vaccinated,” although so few that the virus is still spreading.

He shied away from discussing what other health authorities have been anxious about, the slowed-down rate of people wanting to be vaccinated as only 62 percent are fully protected, short of the 70 percent needed to beat back the health crisis.
