As people are essentially returning to a near-normal life despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is lingering concern that so many people are dying and needing to be put on ventilators in public hospitals.
The President of Athens-Piraeus hospital doctor, Matina Pagoni, told SKAI TV that there are too many cases overall as well because of anti-vaxxers spreading the Coronavirus although the New Democracy government said it won’t make them be inoculated.
“So many deaths are attributed to the low rate of vaccinations, but also to a large number of intubated patients. If we were like Denmark, which has a very high rate of vaccinations, we would have five to six deaths (a day.) Now we are like Romania,” she said, adding that vaccination rates are low among the elderly and children aged 12-15.
About 62 percent of Greece’s population of 10.7 million has been fully vaccinated, less than the 70 percent that health officials said is needed to further beat back the pandemic, but only health workers are required to have shots.
That troubling news came as areas around the country with continuing high rates of the Coronavirus are being designated “Purple,” to show another layer of risk.
The government is said to be thinking of adding additional health conditions in those areas while around the country others deemed safer is seeing people walking around almost naturally, the virus still in the air.
The measures could include mandatory wearing of masks everywhere and double masks in mass transport, according to TV station Skai which broke the news.
