In recent years, the destructive phenomena from the uncontrolled movement of sheep and goats have intensified, as the Municipality of Folegandros has noted, while at the same time, “stray” sheep and goats are constantly multiplying, creating even greater problems.
In summary, the following are problems from the free movement, mainly of sheep and goats:
-the risk of causing a serious accident to vehicle drivers,
-the partial or total destruction (bulistries) of the terraces, which in addition to serving to retain the soil and protect the land from erosion, are also protected monuments of cultural heritage,
-the destruction of crops, trees, and gardens.
In this context and in order to address the problems caused by unattended productive animals, the municipality has taken a series of decisions, which are as follows:
-Unattended grazing of livestock is prohibited, without the presence of the livestock farmer.
-It is prohibited for domestic animals and birds to roam freely outside livestock facilities.
-Also, the roaming or grazing and outdoor stables of animals in open areas of residential areas, in archaeological or archaeologically interesting areas, tourist, camping, group swimming beaches, and waste disposal areas are prohibited.
As a result of all of the above, livestock farmers are requested to immediately comply with the current legal framework, in order to avoid the risks from the unattended movement of sheep and goats.
Otherwise, the Municipality of Folegandros reserves the right to implement the current provisions, which, among other things, provide for:
-the capture and collection of unattended production animals by teams experienced in handling production animals,
-the sale of these animals and their products
-and the imposition of an administrative fine that will be certified and collected by the municipality’s financial department.
The relevant decision will be forwarded to the Agricultural and Beekeeping Cooperative of Folegandros for information to its members.
