With the highest priority on protecting human life, the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands is bringing lifeguards back to its busy beaches after years.
The relevant contract with the contractor company BAYLINE SERVICES was signed on Tuesday, July 8, with a delay due to bureaucratic procedures, and thus seven of the most popular beaches of the Municipality are now provided with full lifeguard coverage, under the terms and conditions provided for by the demanding Greek legislation.
The beaches of Ai Gordis, Kontogyalos, Glyfada, Paleokastritsa, Barbati, Ipsos, and Dassia are now protected with 34 trained lifeguards and 17 lifeguard platforms, equipped with the necessary medical and pharmaceutical material, from 10 am to 6 pm, daily, as well as Sundays and holidays, until September 30.
Strengthening the sense of security of bathers and their protection against accidents, the contracting company has five (5) five-meter boats for the overall supervision of the bathing facilities, as well as the geographical area of the Municipality, seventeen (17) small speedboats for each lifeguard, and demarcations for the bathing facilities.
The motorized equipment of the lifeguard coverage also includes six (6) sea jet skis, as defined by the Law for beaches covered by more than one lifeguard.
The total cost will reach 534,000 Euros (including VAT) and comes from co-financing by the Ministry of the Interior and the Municipality.
It is noted that, for many years, the relevant announcement for lifeguard coverage was made, but in the middle of the summer season, it was extremely difficult to express interest.
It is clarified that, crowded, according to the P.D. 71/2020 are considered beaches with an average daily attendance of at least three hundred (300) bathers, for each beach with a coastline length of up to one kilometer (similarly for each corresponding, after the first kilometer, coastline length) during peak periods.
