The Municipality of Mykonos has strongly condemned certain construction professionals who are violating an existing Regulatory Decision that prohibits disruptive construction activities during the peak of the tourist season.
According to the municipality, this behavior is not only illegal but also deeply antisocial and highly damaging to both the island’s tourism image and local economy. It further highlights that the noise and visual pollution caused by such activities disrupts the peace of permanent residents and deprives visitors of the enjoyment of their holidays.
The constant movement of heavy machinery on the island’s road network is also noted as a factor that exacerbates traffic congestion, making transportation more difficult and degrading the overall quality of the tourist experience in Mykonos.
Deputy Mayor Mr. Konstantinos Sachas also addressed the issue, emphasizing the disturbance reported by residents and tourists alike, the worsening traffic due to construction vehicles, and the damage inflicted on the island’s reputation.
Given that previous warnings and appeals by the municipality have not been heeded, the Municipal Council has now established a Monitoring Committee to oversee compliance with the Regulatory Decision. This committee will report violations to the Municipality’s Technical Services, which will then impose administrative fines on offenders.
Additionally, the Council has decided to send a final warning to all businesses operating in construction, material transport, or possessing heavy machinery, urging them to comply immediately. The Council expressed its firm commitment to fully enforce the ban on disruptive construction activities in order to protect the quality and reputation of Mykonos as a premier tourist destination.
