Conference on the challenges and prospects of tourism in Ilia

On July 21, a conference titled “Tourism Challenges and Development Prospects in Ilia” will be held at the Chamber of Commerce in Pyrgos, co-organized by the Region of Western Greece and the Patras Cultural, Tourism, Sports, Arts, National Tradition and Heritage Association.

The event aims to foster constructive dialogue about the tourism sector in the region of Ilia, through a variety of perspectives and expert contributions. Invited speakers will share proposals and strategies for leveraging Ilia’s unique comparative advantages. The discussion will focus on the current situation, growth potential, and the strengths and weaknesses of the area’s tourism offering.

According to the Region of Western Greece, the strategic goal for 2025 is to strengthen Western Greece’s position on the tourism map and to solidify partnerships that have already been developed both domestically and internationally.

Ilia boasts significant cultural and natural assets. It is home to the world-renowned Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and their ideals. Thousands of visitors from around the globe visit this sacred site each year—one of the most iconic landmarks of ancient Greece.

Beyond this emblematic site, Ilia offers a rich blend of natural and cultural heritage: from the Temple of Apollo Epicurius in Andritsaina—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—to the thermal springs of Kaiafas and Kyllini. The region also features stunning beaches such as Kourouta, Katakolo, and Kyllini, where Ionian Sea coastlines meet lush pine forests, forming a breathtaking natural landscape.

Development prospects are also boosted by recent infrastructure improvements, including the completion of the modern Patras–Pyrgos highway, the operation of Araxos Airport, and the arrival of cruise ships at Katakolo port. These advancements open up new possibilities for the region’s tourism growth.

At the same time, the promotion of alternative forms of tourism—not only in Pyrgos but across all municipalities of Ilia—can further enhance the tourism footprint of Western Greece and help reshape its profile in a sustainable and multidimensional way.
