Municipality of Sintiki: We were deceived – Insecurity in an area under tourist development

In a resolution, the Municipality of Sintiki reacts to the possibility of creating a new immigrant structure in the area.

The Resolution is as follows:

“In the Municipality of Sintiki, since March 2020, a Controlled Temporary Accommodation Facility for Asylum Seekers has been operating, which sometimes hosts up to 800 inmates. At that time, the government promised that the Facility in Kleidi would only operate for 30 days and that it would be closed. Five years later, we all know that neither one nor the other was true.

They deceived us. This insolvency is now causing reasonable doubt in the intentions of the Ministry of Migration Policy, which we learned from publications that it is planning to create a new closed-type migrant facility in the territory of the Regional Unit of Serres, with Sintiki being considered the most preferred location for its construction. This morning, through the mouth of the Minister of Migration Policy, Mr. We learned later that no new structure will be built and that the existing ones will be converted into closed structures.

We express our dissatisfaction with the complete lack of information provided to the local government by the Ministry of Migration Policy on such a serious issue that affects the quality of life of the citizens of Sintiki.

We believe that there should be no migrant structure anywhere in Greek territory. Especially in the Municipality of Sintiki, where a titanic effort is being made to create infrastructure and attract investments that will bring the much-desired tourist development to our border Municipality by exploiting natural resources and promoting important tourist destinations, it is unacceptable to have a migrant structure that de facto degrades and creates conditions of insecurity for both permanent residents and prospective visitors.

We ask the Ministry Immigration Policy:

1. No new structure should be built within the boundaries of the Municipality of Sintiki.

2. The timetable for the closure of the existing structure in Kleidi should be determined, as its location on the border is of critical importance for national security.

3. While the existing structure in Kleidi is operating, the correct compensation benefits should be retroactively given that will compensate for the (for 5 years) degradation of Sintiki.

4. While the existing structure in Kleidi is operating, it should be closed and have a sufficient police force (not just security) to guard it in order to deal with any future uprisings by immigrants, who are mostly young men.”
