Crete: 82 rescues in 15 days – Bathers ignoring warnings

The beaches of Crete remain a magnet for thousands of visitors, but their beauty also hides serious dangers. In the last 15 days alone, lifeguards in Chania carried out 82 rescues, showing that even the most popular beaches are not without risk.

One of the most characteristic incidents occurred when five bathers ignored the red flag, which warns of dangerous waters, and it was necessary for an off-duty lifeguard to intervene to save them. This fact demonstrates a significant problem: many visitors do not listen to instructions, defy warnings and put their lives at risk.

Experts point out that the biggest problems arise from strong currents, waves and areas where swimming is dangerous. Negligence and lack of respect for safety rules increase the chances of accidents, even for experienced swimmers.

The advice of lifeguards is clear: follow the flags, respect the instructions and do not underestimate the power of the sea. Responsibility of bathers is the key to keeping the beaches of Crete safe and enjoyable for everyone.
