Kalymnos: Professor Ian Helge Larsen Honorary Citizen for his many years of contribution to the island

The Municipality of Kalymnos has proceeded to proclaim Professor of Medicine Ian Helge Larsen as an honorary citizen, honoring a personality who for decades has connected the island with the international scientific community and has substantially contributed to its tourist promotion abroad. The decision is a recognition of his long-standing and invaluable contribution, both in the field of medical education and in strengthening the extroversion of Kalymnos through the organization of specialized seminars.

Mr. Larsen, a prominent figure of the Medical School of the University of Copenhagen, has extensive scientific experience and international recognition. Born in 1942, he studied medicine at the University of Copenhagen and was licensed to practice in the United States in 1970. He conducted research on tuberculosis and then trained in a range of modern approaches, such as Gestalt therapy, acupuncture, hypnosis and social psychology. In 1994, he qualified as a general practitioner and from 1977 to 2006 he taught at the University’s Department of General Medicine, while developing innovative educational methods, such as video supervision in the clinical examination of patients.

With extensive writing activity, dozens of publications and a high degree of international recognition, he has been awarded the MAHLER distinction, the highest honorary award for doctors in Denmark, and is an honorary member of the Royal College of General Practitioners of Great Britain.

His relationship with Kalymnos began 35 years ago, when he chose the island as a venue for specialized medical seminars. Since then, more than 5,000 doctors from countries such as Denmark and Sweden have participated in these programs, which are consistently repeated every year. The organization of the seminars has evolved into one of the most important pillars of the island’s scientific extroversion, creating ties with Scandinavia and upgrading the tourist footprint of Kalymnos. Many of the participants visit the island again, often with their families, strengthening the local economy and the overall recognition of the destination.

Of particular importance is the fact that the medical method taught in these seminars is internationally known as the “Kalymnos Method”, making the island a reference point in international medical education, even for professionals who have not visited it. The programs have been included in the mandatory medical education of Denmark and Sweden, confirming their educational value. Four seminars have already been planned for 2025 and eight more for 2026.

Mr. Larsen’s many years of activity in Kalymnos have contributed substantially to the cultivation of strong ties with Scandinavia, to the establishment of the island as a place to host high-profile scientific events, to the strengthening of the local society and economy through the steady flow of distinguished visitors, as well as to the emergence of Kalymnos as an emerging destination for medical and conference tourism.

His proclamation as an honorary citizen is an act of honor towards a person who has contributed decisively to the emergence of Kalymnos as a distinct destination for scientific knowledge, quality tourism and international cooperation.
