The City of Athens is currently owed about 325 million euros in back rent from businesses that use public space for their tables and chairs and haven’t paid — some for as much as 5 years, ekathimerini.com recently reported.
The efforts of the City of Athens to collect the past-due rents from debtors has led to a recent crackdown on businesses. Not only are public authorities confiscating establishments’ chairs and tables placed on public property when they don’t pay their rent, they are also insisting that businesses must either pay their debt due or make payment arrangements before a new permit is issued.
Just this Thursday, public authorities confiscated the tables and chairs of one business in fashionable Kolonaki area which is past-due in its rent for the public space by as much as 415,000 euros, said the deputy mayor Andreas Varelas, according to ekathimerini.com. Varelas explained that the establishment, which is one of the oldest in the area, hasn’t paid rent for the public space to the City of Athens since 2012.
