The European Commission has already opened the 2026 competitions for the “European Capital of Smart Tourism” and the “European Green Smart Tourism Champion”.
The Commission is inviting tourist destinations across Europe to submit applications showcasing their innovative practices in the field of smart and sustainable tourism in order to become leading examples to emulate.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism award recognises European cities that are tourist destinations and have outstanding achievements in four categories: sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation and cultural heritage, and creativity.
This competition is open to cities with a population of over 100,000. At the same time, the European Green Smart Tourism Champion competition highlights emerging sustainable tourism destinations across Europe. It aims to reward smaller destinations with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 that have successfully implemented green transition practices to promote sustainable tourism.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, said:
“By recognising cities that have successfully embraced smart, sustainable and forward-looking tourism, we inspire other cities to follow suit. These winning cities act as role models, demonstrating that tourism can thrive while respecting local communities and preserving each city’s unique identity. We look forward to receiving your applications.”
Cities have until 30 May 2025, at 18:00 (Greece time), to submit their applications online, showcasing their innovative tourism practices.
