In the footsteps of Zorba: Running race in Kolindros, Pieria

On March 16, Kolindros, Pieria, is scheduled to host the athletic event entitled “In the footsteps of Zorba”, organized by the municipality of Pydna – Kolindros.

According to Deputy Mayor Mr. Elias Polyzos, Kolindros, with its rich history and special cultural heritage, is fortunate to be associated with a name of global significance: Alexis Zorba. A man who, through the work of Nikos Kazantzakis, became a symbol of freedom, dynamism, and authenticity. Zorba lived for many years in Kolindros, where his residence still exists today, a living link with the history of the place.

With the aim of preserving the memory of Zorba, the tourist and cultural development of the place, as well as the strengthening of the sporting ideal, it was decided to institute a running race called “In the Steps of Zorba”.

These races will include three routes: 14,000 meters for experienced runners, 4,500 meters for amateur runners, and 500 meters for children and people of all ages.

The start and finish of the races will take place in the central square of Kolindros, while the routes will cross beautiful landscapes of the area.

Zorba by Nikos Kazantzakis

Zorba by Nikos Kazantzakis is one of the most characteristic works of Greek literature, which examines the nature of the human psyche through the history of the relationship between the narrator and Alexei Zorba.

It is noted that the central character, Zorba, is a real person with whom Kazantzakis had collaborated in Mani, in a mining company. However, in the work, the person is mythologized, and the setting of the action is in Crete, where the author-narrator and Zorba attempt to establish a lignite mine.

Zorba is a figure who embodies absolute freedom, the sense of living, and the coexistence of contradictions, as he manages to combine wild natural strength with his inner poetic side. Zorba’s philosophy is based on the search for happiness through intense life and authenticity, in contrast to social conventions and restrictive values.

The narrator’s relationship with Zorba evolves through their contradictions and different worldviews, creating a dynamic that mirrors the juxtaposition of the philosophy of the mind with instinctive action. The work highlights the importance of human freedom and the need to live passionately despite life’s adversities and disappointments.
