Biodiversity protection plan is in full swing in Elafonisi

The fourth meeting of the Implementation and Monitoring Committee of the Action Plan for the protection of biodiversity in Elafonisi was held on 15 April 2025, confirming the progress of the measures that have been implemented, but also highlighting serious issues of delinquency that continue to undermine efforts to preserve the sensitive ecosystem of the area.

According to the Committee’s assessment, since the implementation of the relevant Joint Ministerial Decision (Government Gazette 752D/2023) and the Ministerial Decision on the restriction of vehicle access, improvements have been noted in critical habitat types and protected species. The positive impacts are expected to intensify as the Action Plan is in full swing.

However, the pressure in the Voulismeni area, where heavy traffic is observed, remains high. Despite the ban, caravans and other vehicles continue to pass through and park within the protected area. In addition, illegal entry of business service vehicles and unauthorized recreational constructions within the core of the area were observed.

The Committee recalls that, according to Article 3 of the Joint Ministerial Decree and Law 1650/1986, these violations are subject to criminal sanctions. Furthermore, it is emphasized that no approvals have been granted for recreational infrastructure in the heart of the protected area.

Of particular concern is the uncontrolled grazing of goats and sheep within Zones A1 (Aspri Limni), A2 (Kedrosos), and A3 (Elafonisi), where grazing is expressly prohibited, as it affects critical species, such as cedars.

The Commission calls on residents, visitors, and business people in the area to contribute to the implementation of the measures, respecting the unique natural wealth of Elafonisi. At the same time, in cooperation with the competent services, an intensification of controls and surveillance is announced.

Elafonisi remains one of the most valuable natural treasures of the country, and its preservation is a collective responsibility.
